Some evenings, the greatest joy lies not only in the music — but in the surprise. Surprises enchant us all – it’s wonderful to plan them, and even more wonderful to live them, as the evening takes a turn you never quite saw coming. Such is the spirit of this extraordinary Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra concert – an evening rich with musical discoveries, surprising twists, and festive atmosphere where every piece feels like a gift waiting to be unwrapped.
Bedřich Smetana’s symphonic poem “Vltava,” one of the evening’s centerpieces, sweeps the listener into an unbroken musical journey – from the faintest trickle of a mountain spring to the wide, majestic flow of a vast river. It stands as one of the most poetic landscapes in all of Romantic music – one where the beauty of the natural world and the richness of human emotion are inseparably entwined.
Rossini’s Overture to “Semiramide” is a radiant gem of Italian bel canto at its finest, where effortless elegance, theatrical grandeur, and orchestral virtuosity converge. Rossini’s music flows with effortless grace, yet beneath it lies a remarkable precision, and an unmistakable sense of grandeur.
Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story” will bring an entirely different energy to the evening – one of the 20th century’s most exhilarating orchestral works, where the concert hall tradition collides with urban rhythm, jazz-infused heat, and the electric tension of musical theatre. The music crackles with relentless energy, movement, and dramatic pulse that never lets go.
Finally, Maurice Ravel’s “Boléro” is a work whose deceptively simple structure conceals a mastery of the orchestral craftsmanship. One theme, a constantly returning rhythm, and a gradually intensifying orchestral crescendo – together they produce one of the most spellbinding and powerful finales in the history of orchestral music.
Perhaps the greatest intrigue of this evening lies not only in the programme? For music becomes the most meaningful of gifts for those whose hearts hold special place for the sound of a live orchestra.
Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra raises its voice in celebration by sending heartfelt congratulations to their director Algimantas Treikauskas on the occasion of his jubilee.
