Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis – Symphonic Poem “The Sea”
“Why are you complaining, sea?” asked Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis more than a century ago, as if sensing the future lament of the Baltic Sea.
When Čiurlionis created “The Sea”, the world was still breathing differently – the sea was a symbol of purity, a powerful but clean force of nature. People lived slower lives, closer to nature, not yet aware of the scale of ecological burden and global anxiety. Today is a different era. The sea is poisoned. Society lives as if on a “ticking bomb,” where every step is accompanied by inner tension, anxiety, bad premonitions, and threats from neighboring countries.
For choreographer Birutė Letukaitė, M. K. Čiurlionis’ “The Sea” became the main metaphor for talking about the changed relationship between modern man and nature, about the sore points of today: the Baltic Sea polluted with toxic substances and a society polluted with phobias, selfishness, and apathy. The disturbed balance between nature and man brings mutual and irreversible losses.
