2013-07-04 / Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra will perform opera "Birute"


The opera "Birutė" will be performed on occasion of the State Day in Palanga, in Birutė Park on July 6 at 9 pm.

The opera will be performed by Kaunas State Choir, Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, soloists Asta Krikščiūnaitė (soprano), Audrius Rubežius (tenor), Rafailas Karpis (tenor), Arūnas Malikėnas (baritone), Giedrius Žalys (baritone), actors Arnoldas Jalianiauskas, Sigitas Račkys, Ferdinadas Jakšys, Gediminas Storpirštis. The conductor is Modestas Pitrėnas, director - actress Birutė Marcinkevičiūtė-Mar.

The play "Birutė" was written by Gabrielius Landsbergis-Žemkalnis in Vilnius in 1906. Mikas Petrauskas composed music for "Birutė" in several weeks, and the musical performance was presented at Vilnius City Hall on November 6, 1906. The opera "Birutė" is based on the well-known historical legend about the meeting of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Kęstutis and priestess Birutė in Palanga and about their love.

The 100th anniversary of the national opera was marked in 2006. On this occasion the concert performance of the opera was presented at the National Philharmonic Hall. Later the opera was performed in Pažaislis Festival and at Biržai Castle along with Kaunas State Choir. In 2008 the compact disc of the first Lithuanian opera "Birutė" was released.
